As soon as the idea popped into my head to start a blog about family life as a stay-at-home-mom, I knew I wanted to write about sleep training. I wanted to write the kind of post I was desperately in search of three years ago, when I was a sleep-deprived, frustrated mama who had hit her limit with midnight madness. If you are there now, waking up several times at night to soothe your little one, oh how I understand what you’re going through!
Here’s where I was at three years ago. I was exhausted. I was getting up several times in the middle of the night to rock my one-and-a-half year old “baby” back to sleep. Even though he hadn’t nursed at night since he hit ten months, he still needed me to be his human lovie every time his sleep cycle was light and he stirred.
I’d stumble in his room, lift him out of his cradle, and dutifully rock him until he fell back into a deep sleep. Then I’d lay him down in his crib and pray he didn’t stir as I made my terrifying retreat from the room. At that point, I’d crash back in the queen-sized oasis that I was supposed to share with my husband and pray for the sweet release of death dreamland.
A Gentle Method
I don’t have to tell you that when your sleep is interrupted, you aren’t yourself. The same thing is true for your little one. We all know that sleep is healthy and necessary and gives us so much more energy, emotional stability, and TIME and makes for a much happier life…but the problem of wanting to gently teach our little ones to sleep is where things get sticky.
As a first-time parent, I knew that I had the option of laying my son in the crib and walking away. But it felt like abandoning him. I didn’t have the stomach for it, and I didn’t want to put either myself or my son through that. My husband and I both felt that it just wasn’t the right approach for us. I read and researched and spent countless HOURS looking for a magic answer, but it didn’t come.
Until Sleep Sense. Yep, it’s true. I wanted a gentle method, and I GOT it! I also wanted someone to teach me, to walk me through a proven process, to give me emotional support from the standpoint of an expert, but I didn’t have the money for a fancy paid sleep training consultant. Well, I got all of that without the fancy price.
Ry and I talked it over and decided to go with the Gold package that includes
- an e-book
- a workbook, and
- a video training library
The videos were an essential part of the package for us. Every morning, Dana Obleman herself would talk to us about our night last night, share what to do and what to expect next, as well as countless tips for different situations. The videos helped me feel fully supported, like someone was holding my hand and coaching me every step of the way.
And it worked.
Thanks to Sleep Sense, it wasn’t long before I was able to lay my son down and walk away without a single tear from him. He learned to happily chatter to himself as he fell asleep, and I was no longer necessary. Or even wanted. The full program took two weeks, and it changed our lives.
When my daughter came along, I knew exactly what I would be doing to teach her to sleep. I reviewed some of the principles when I was pregnant, and she became a very good sleeper from the start. We’ve had a few struggles when she was sick and needed me, but that’s to be expected, and I know how to get back on track right away. These days, I’m happy to report she’s fully sleep trained. I love laying her down and watching on our video monitor as she gets comfortable and soothes herself to sleep in minutes. It’s amazing!
At the time, I was a little embarrassed that I paid someone to help me teach my son to sleep. Now I have ZERO shame. This was absolutely the answer we needed, and if you’re struggling, I think it’s the answer for you, too. I’m just sharing this because I really, really want to help any struggling mamas out there. I know what it’s like to be sleep deprived and stressed. But I found a great solution and I just can’t keep quiet about it!
If you and your little ones are struggling with sleep, this is an amazing solution. Trust me, you’ll wish you had done it sooner.
