This year, one of my personal goals is to memorize scripture. There’s just one little problem: There is already so much floating around in this mom-brain that I don’t usually do this in spite of good intentions. The most I did in 2017 was memorize one lonely little verse.
So I’m starting slow and being a lot more intentional. My wonderful planner happens to have space set aside for a verse of the month. This year, I want to intentionally fill out those spaces with the verse I’m focusing on.
Why Memorize Scripture?
I’m not an expert at memorizing scripture, obviously, but I do know a little something about why it should be done. The Bible is full of encouragement to write the words of scripture on our heart, to pass them along to our children, even to eat them (metaphorically).
I love this quote about memorizing scripture.
I know of no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding, practically speaking, than memorizing Scripture. . . . No other single exercise pays greater spiritual dividends! Your prayer life will be strengthened. Your witnessing will be sharper and much more effective. Your attitudes and outlook will begin to change. Your mind will become alert and observant. Your confidence and assurance will be enhanced. Your faith will be solidified.Chuck Swindoll, Growing Strong in the Seasons of Life
Basically, God knows we’re up against quite the challenge in this fallen world, and He wants us to be armed with His words. Storing up His words helps to keep us from sin (Ps. 119:11).
There are so many reasons to memorize scripture! Here’s an incomplete list of why it’s a better-than-good idea.
- it strengthens our faith
- it protects our minds
- it keeps us from sin
- it informs our prayer life
- it allows us to share our faith effectively
- it enhances confidence and trust
I’m amazed at the benefits of memorizing scripture, and completely humbled because I haven’t memorized verses the way I want to.

How Pretty Scripture Cards Motivate Me
I didn’t succeed in memorizing verses for a couple of reasons: I didn’t have a plan, and I didn’t particularly enjoy the process. I decided to stop that nonsense this year.
First, I chose twelve awesome verses that I’m particularly drawn to and I think you’ll love. They are encouraging and a bit convicting as well. Then, I designed note cards that I can use around the house and in my planner to make it that much more fun.
Let’s face it: if it’s pretty, I’m going to enjoy it a LOT more. Now I have the extra motivation I need to meditate on and memorize a specific verse every month this year.
You can grab those pretty scripture cards by visiting my shop here. I’m sharing them because I want it to be as easy as possible for you to be inspired by God’s word on a regular basis. Focusing on one verse a month is a simple, but powerful, way to grow spiritually.
Here are the verses I chose for each month. I hope they inspire you as they have inspired me!
1 Peter 4:8
1 John 1:7
2 Corinthians 9:11
I hope you’re encouraged and uplifted by God’s word this year. Fellow moms, keep the inspiration going with my free Moms of the Bible devotional.
I’d love for you to join me in memorizing and meditating on these verses each month as well. We can do it! I think this is going to be a fantastic year.
