Ok, ladies. Before I get started, I need you to know I definitely don’t wear a full face of makeup every day. There are plenty of days when I’m wearing mascara and lip gloss and calling it good enough. Or a bare face and a not-even-cute messy bun.
I wear makeup for myself–because I love using it and it makes me feel more “put together” even on a day that consists of staying home and cleaning up bodily fluids. When I actually have time, these are the products I love the most.
As you can guess, I’ve tried a lot of makeup in my life. I started playing around with it when I was 19 and I got hooked–not on any particular brand or any flashy colors, but on trying to find products that work and that I love. So when the Girl Chat linkup on this topic came along, I knew I had to join in!
I’m only sharing the best of the best here! These are things I’d recommend to anyone without any hesitation whatsoever.
Mad Lash by The Balm
I let the cat out of the bag early when I wrote about this for my Friday favorites a couple of weeks ago. It took me a long time to find my favorite mascara, and when I did I couldn’t hold back! (Plus, I was worried about it selling out.) This mascara does everything it should do. And it doesn’t feel crunchy. Imagine that! I love that I can just apply this stuff and be on my way, knowing it won’t clump, flake, run, or weigh down my lashes. I use this almost every day.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Lip Shine
In my about me, I mentioned that I’m a lip gloss lover and not into matte lips. If you’re a gloss addict like me, try this out! Your lips will thank you. This stuff is so pretty and really great for dry lips! It contains hyaluronic acid, an intense moisturizer, which all the cool kids are using in their lip gloss these days. I have it in pink sorbet.
Burt’s Bees Radiance Eye Cream with Royal Jelly
I’ve used this eye cream for years, and I love it. It’s simple–it hydrates really well and is great for sensitive eyes. It has a rich, creamy consistency with a sweet but light scent. I wear this at night and it keeps the skin around my eyes soft and plump. I don’t think it takes away wrinkles, but I think it does keep problems at bay. It just feels really good.
I’m all over the place with lipstick! I always grab a moisturizing lip stick in a nude, medium pink, or plum color. I have scary pale lips, so I love wearing a little color but I like it to look pretty natural. My favorites include Loreal’s Color Riche line, Pacifica’s Devocean lipsticks, and when I’m splurging, Mac’s moisturizing formulas (cremesheen, lustre, satin, and amplified creme). All three of these brands will condition your lips and come in pretty shades!
I’m also all over the place with blush. But I have to jump on the Nars orgasm bandwagon, because it’s so fantastic! If you’re looking for something less pricey, Pacifica’s blushious in Camellia is very nice too. Both will give you a natural flush that’s peachy-pink, and they go on like butta.
Eye Shadow Palettes by Too Faced
I got tired of playing around with a million different eye shadows and finally decided to bite the bullet and get a palette from a good brand. Too Faced makes such pretty sets, and one of my favorite things about them is that they smell like their name! Here’s an example. I have the Chocolate Bon Bons palette. It looks like this inside:
And it smells like chocolate. Between the scent, the colors, and the heart shaped shadows, this has me written all over it. But I’d recommend any of their palettes–they are highly pigmented and long lasting shades, and you can get a smaller one if you prefer. I know Sweet Peach and Chocolate Bar are very popular too.
It’s a bit of a bummer that these palettes are pricey, but I think it’s been worth it for me to have one go-to palette that I love instead of a bunch of experimental shadows from drugstores that aren’t high quality and I discard in a few weeks. You can tell the difference with one swipe–they apply better, which means it’s a lot easier to get the look you want and blend it out. When it comes to eye shadow, it ends up being more affordable for me to go high end and be DONE with all the shopping and guesswork. This is a splurge for sure!
Ipsy’s Glam Bag
I recommend a glam bag subscription…
- If gifts is your love language
- If you are on the hunt for makeup and are up for trying different things
- If you want super cute makeup bags in your life
There’s nothing like receiving things you love in the mail once a month, particularly for this gift-loving gal. Ipsy is how I discovered my new favorite mascara and is the reason I have decent makeup brushes (see photographical evidence above). The items I get are quality, pretty, and right up my alley–I just make sure to keep my profile up to date and review every bag. As a side note, I’ve been a fan of Michelle Phan since her early days (the founder is a YouTube makeup guru), so it’s kind of fun to support her this way.
Oh, and the bags are SO fantastic! Take a look at the one in my photo–it’s a blush pink honeycomb pattern with rose gold hardware. Yes, please! I use the bags to store my makeup but I’ve also used them as a clutch. If I get a bag that I’m not particularly fond of, it goes to my baby girl, who loves playing with the zipper and hiding toys inside. A subscription is $10/month.
I can’t wait to see what you guys recommend! I’m still looking for a HG serum, moisturizer, foundation, setting spray, primer, and more. Sigh. Life is tough.
